Applet Description                                                      

 polynomial fnts, tangent lines, derivatives

 

 

This applet shows a dynamic cubic function, where coefficients are changed using sliders.  Point A on the x-axis controls points B and C. Check boxes  to hide/show the graph and equation of f'. 

 upper, lower, trapezoid, left, right, midpoint sums and definite integral

 

This applet shows a randomly generated, dynamic quartic function.  The various definite integral approximations and the polygons can be shown using the check boxes.  The upper, lower limits and number of rectangles/trapezoids can be controlled with the sliders.  Resetting the screen produces a new function.

slope intercept form practice applet 

 

This applet shows randomly generated linear functions in slope-intercept form.  Students can practice graphing the equation of a linear function by moving points A and B appropriately.  When the line matches the equation they will get a message telling them that they are correct.  Resetting the screen produces a new linear function.

Integer Addition 

 

This applet allows students to create a problem with a sum of two integers.  They can work it out themselves then check their work step-by-step by clicking on each steps box. 
   

 

Reflections:

 

8/2/10 - Today I felt very comfortable using Geogebra.  It is easy to navigate, and having used Geometer's Sketchpad a great deal in the past (when I taught Geometry) was a big help.  I haven't taught Geometry in about 5 years, so I haven't used Sketchpad much.  So I truly appreciated the Algebra component of Geogebra that created a much more versatile tool for use in all classes!  I liked navigating through some of the Geogebra wiki, trying a few of the directed activities in the handouts, and working independently on a dynamic tool for use in my own classroom.  I keep wondering how I am going to get my students comfortable using the Geogebra software.  I want them familiar enough with it so that the lessons will be about the concepts and not how to get the software to do what they are asked to make it do.  I feel like unless I have dynamic figures created and ready for them to manipulate, they will spend too much time figuring out the software.  But I do not have the time to create the files.  I hope to find numerous items already out there so that I can use them and adapt them to my class.  It looks like that will be possible using the forum.

8/3/10 -  I really made some progress on my two applets.  I've improved them with suggestions from other workshop participants and made them more asthetically appealing. :)  I learned a few of the tricks of the tools today. It really does help working through the handouts, even on the simple activities that don't seem to have any use in my particular classroom.  It brings up questions about tools I may use in other applets and shows me how they work.  The constructions are well written!  It helps having Steve and other workshop participants to work through the kinks!

8/4/10 - Another productive day.  I like the "show this item when this happens" tool!  It's making it fun to work on dynamic worksheets students can use for practice and I can use for problems on a quiz or test!!!  Great stuff!

 

Work in progress 8/4/10:  slope intercept form practice applet

    *I really want this applet to show the slope as a fraction, NOT a decimal....how can I do that?* Another problem....if the randombetween chooses 0 for the denominator, the coefficient of x is infinity...really....the symbol infinity shows up in front of the x.  interesting!  I guess the students might deduce it is a vertical line??? (probably not)  NEVER MIND!!!  THANKS TO EVERYONE'S HELP AND SUGGESTIONS I FIGURED THIS STUFF OUT.  I THINK THE APPLET IS LOOKING PRETTY GOOD! 

 

 

 

8/5/10 - Another day, another new discovery! :)  I liked using the sequence commands today.  I am getting more comfortable with the commands and how to make them do what I want.  Even if I'm not sure what to do, the tools are really pretty easy to figure out.  Often commands work as you would expect.  I liked how the commands for sequences were a lot like the language we use in class using i from 1 to n, where we choose an n.  With my applet I let n get very big so we could talk about what happens as n goes to infinity.  The spreadsheet is that way also.  I don't know a lot about spreadsheets, but have used Excel enough to feel that the GeoGebra spreadsheet was very user friendly!

I understand...without taking too much away from the normal course of events in your class, perhaps teach the kids one or two essential things a day? I also use Jing to create short videos of how to use the tools. This might me an idea.

Yep! That is the idea behind the packets. They may not seem to apply, but when someone like you who has the SKILL to create some very cool things works through them, you learn some tricks.

You need to begin working with some of the Boolean commands.
